Vituity Partner Dr. Andrew Southard Receives American College of Emergency Physicians’ 2019 Community Emergency Medicine Excellence Award

EMERYVILLE, Calif. (Oct. 15, 2019) — Vituity, a physician-led and -owned multispecialty partnership, is pleased to announce that Andrew Southard, MD, Medical Director of Saint Alphonsus Health System’s emergency department, was recognized by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) with the 2019 Community Emergency Medicine Excellence Award for his outstanding contributions to care in the Boise, Idaho, community.

“Having the region’s most advanced trauma network, Saint Alphonsus Health System is known for its medical excellence, innovation, and collaboration. Under Dr. Southard’s leadership, the ED team at Saint Alphonsus collaborated to improve performance and efficiency, resulting in shorter waits for patients, better outcomes, and improved patient experience,” said Gregg Miller, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Vituity. “We are proud of Drew and his team for working so hard and embracing new approaches to deliver better care to more members of the community.”

Dr. Southard attended the University of Colorado and completed residency training in emergency medicine at the University of New Mexico. He serves as the department chair of emergency medicine and medical director for Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, the region's most advanced Level II Trauma Center. He works clinically at Regional Medical Center in Boise, South Nampa, and Eagle Health Plaza campuses. Before medicine, Dr. Southard worked as a wildland firefighter, EMT-B, and wilderness guide throughout the West and Alaska.

The ACEP Community Emergency Medicine Excellence Award is presented at the Emergency Medicine Practice Committee meeting during the ACEP annual meeting and is determined by the Emergency Medicine Practice Committee and ACEP Board of Directors. Recipients are also recognized at the annual President’s Awards Gala. Last year’s award recipient was another Vituity physician, Sergio Hernandez, MD, Emergency Department Medical Director for Citrus Valley Health Partners (CVHP).

Saint Alphonsus in Boise was also recently recognized as achieving the highest rating possible in four procedures or conditions in U.S. News & World Report’s America's Best Hospitals list: congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hip replacement, and knee replacement.
