Inpatient Psychiatry

Vituity Inpatient Psychiatry program provides full-time, expert care for hospitalized patients with mental health and substance abuse needs. Our psychiatric hospitalists manage inpatient behavioral health units, drive quality and process improvement, lead psychiatry residency programs, and offer consultation and education to all areas of the hospital.

Comprehensive inpatient psychiatric care when patients need it most

Patients hospitalized due to substance abuse and mental health conditions deserve the same high-quality care as those admitted for heart attack or stroke. Unfortunately, most inpatient psychiatric care is still provided by consulting physicians who are juggling hospital rounds with outpatient practices. Too often, this approach results in inconsistent quality and coverage for the hospital.

At Vituity, we believe that patients in behavioral health crisis deserve better. What’s more, we believe that compassionate, high-quality psychiatric care also benefits hospitals. To this end, we follow a psychiatric hospitalist model in which a dedicated provider team staffs the inpatient unit and is onsite 8–12 hours a day.

Our inpatient psychiatry teams:

  • Provide comprehensive behavioral health care from admission through discharge
  • Partner with intake to support admissions decisions
  • Participate in daily treatment planning, discharge meetings, therapies, and family meetings
  • Consult with providers across the organization
  • Engage in hospital-wide improvement initiatives that add value across the organization.

Our inpatient psychiatry teams:

Benefiting both patients and health systems

Better access to comprehensive psychiatric care: Our clinicians work full-time in their hospitals and are available for consults, multidisciplinary rounding, complex care conferences, and family meetings.

Improved ER throughput: Vituity psychiatrists work with the ER to advise on admissions decisions and facilitate care transitions. This greatly improves ER throughput and reduces psychiatric boarding.

Higher patient satisfaction: Hospital-based psychiatric providers spend more time with patients, families, and significant others, which greatly increases HCAHPS scores.

Better discharge planning: Our multidisciplinary, team-based approach to aftercare ensures a robust plan. Patients are more likely to receive follow up care and less likely to be readmitted within 30 days.

Significant cost savings: Dedicated coverage reduces payer denials and optimizes CMS quality measures. Hospitals also benefit from increased professional fee collections and reduced staffing stipend.

Inpatient Psychiatry in Action: Vituity helped Woodland Memorial Hospital take its inpatient psychiatric unit from operating loss to profit in just nine months. Read the case study.

The partnership with nursing and the entire team is amazing. This has been a successful transition, with great expertise. In a short period of time, we have gone from operating the unit at a loss to bringing in a profit, and we have only seen the unit improve since Vituity took over."
