ACEP Honors Riverside Community Hospital Emergency Department as Wellness Center of Excellence

Published October 06, 2022

EMERYVILLE, Calif. — Vituity is pleased to announce that the Riverside Community Hospital Emergency Department was recognized by the American College of Emergency Physicians as the recipient of the 2022 Emergency Medicine Wellness Center of Excellence Award. This honor is presented annually to an emergency medicine group, department, or clinical site that incorporates wellness and resilience on an institutional level.

Riverside Community Hospital is a Level I trauma center and home to one of the largest EDs in Southern California. The Vituity-managed emergency department treats over 100,000 patients each year.

Under the leadership of Vituity Medical Director Steven Kim, MD, and Residency Program Directors Gregory Guldner, MD, and Jason An, MD, the RCH ED team has consistently advanced knowledge and practice of emergency physician wellness and burnout prevention with research-backed evidence. In 2021, team members published a two-year longitudinal study of resident physician burnout. Experts praised the paper for defining useful outcome measures and highlighting opportunities for targeted interventions. The team has also studied the relationship between assault activations and involuntary psychiatric hold ratios in the ED.

“The emergency medicine team at Riverside Community Hospital is filling crucial gaps in our understanding of physician wellness,” says Gregg Miller, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Vituity. “Emergency physicians are at high risk for burnout. However, we have limited evidence around effective interventions for this population. Through thoughtful research and scholarship, the RCH team is helping to create safer, more responsive workplaces for emergency medicine clinicians.”

Recipients of the Emergency Medicine Wellness Center of Excellence Award are chosen by ACEP’s Well-Being Committee. The award is presented at the annual meeting of ACEP’s Wellness Section. Honorees are also recognized at the annual President’s Awards Gala.
