The Emergency Medicine Job Seeker’s ACEP16 Checklist

Published October 10, 2016

ACEP16 kicks off next Sunday in Las Vegas, and we here at Vituity hope you’re as excited as we are for the big event.

Vituity and ACEP share a long and proud history. Vituity providers have been active in ACEP since its founding in the late 60s. Our Partners have served as state and national ACEP presidents. (Major case in point: current national president Jay Kaplan, MD.)

Vituity Partners were also among the first emergency medicine examiners. And over the years, we’ve partnered with ACEP to lobby for greater healthcare quality and access and to promote diversity within our specialty.

If you happen to be attending, we’d love to see you! As a fast-growing practice, Vituity will be recruiting at ACEP for exciting opportunities across the country. We’ll also be offering innovative programming on the issues you care about.

We know you won’t want to miss a minute of it. So here’s a handy checklist to follow throughout the event.

Learn about the issues affecting democratic groups.

Are you a resident interested in joining a physician partnership? How about a current Partner steering your practice through this time of change? If so, don’t miss this exciting panel discussion.

“Intergenerational Transition of Democratic Groups” will review trends in partnership models, including the growing importance of diversity, managing retirement, and the move toward multispecialty practices. Vituity’s own CEO, Wesley Curry, MD, will moderate the event. Panelists will include Kenneth Gummerson, MD, of Doctor’s Emergency Services (Md.), Marc Futernick, MD, of Valley Emergency Physicians (Calif.), and Carrie de Moor, MD, of Code 3 Emergency Partners (Texas).

Event details:

  • Monday, Oct. 17, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Tradewinds C, Mandalay Bay Conference Center

Hone your clinical judgment around CT scans.

The Choosing Wisely campaign has done great things when it comes to reducing waste and overtreatment in our healthcare system. Interestingly, four of its 10 emergency medicine guidelines involve the use of CT scans.

Evidence suggests that practitioners can safely forego CT utilization in many cases. But that call can be tough when you have a frightened patient in front of you.

Help is on the way. Gregg Miller, MD, the newly appointed Chief Medical Officer for Vituity, will be presenting “CT Utilization and Choosing Wisely” for the ACEP Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS) section. The presentation highlights the latest ground rules for optimal CT scan utilization and provides guidance on how to decrease unnecessary orders.

The project is part of the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation’s Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative to engage 24,000 emergency clinicians to move healthcare towards the triple goal of better health outcomes, more effective healthcare, and lower costs.

Event details:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 18, noon – 2:30 p.m. Check the program for the QIPS meeting location.

Enjoy the perks of residency.

Residency’s a funny thing. At the hospital, you’re low on the totem pole. Then at major conferences, you’re courted like royalty. And that’s doubly true while you’re recruiting.

So if this is your big year, we suggest you take full advantage of the freebies, parties, fun, and attention you’re about to be showered with. And in all seriousness, these events are a great way to get personal with your potential future colleagues.

Vituity will be hosting the following resident programs at ACEP16:

  • EMRA Resident Luncheons, Oct. 16 – 18, from noon – 1:30 p.m.
  • EMRA Job and Fellowship Fair, Sunday, Oct. 16, from 5 – 7 p.m.

Enjoy the perks, period.

You don’t have to be a resident to benefit from a little well deserved wining and dining. On Monday night, Vituity will be hosting a private cocktail reception at the House of Blues. We invite emergency medicine providers interested in learning about a career with Vituity to meet our medical directors, physicians, PAs, and NPs in a relaxed setting and discuss what you’re looking for in an emergency medicine practice.

Event details:

  • Monday, Oct. 17, 6:30 – 10:00 p.m., House of Blues, Las Vegas
  • Online RSVP required. Click here to reserve your spot.

Discuss important issues for advanced providers.

Vituity is the proud practice home to 1,100 physician assistants, nurse practitioners, anesthesiology assistants, and nurse anesthetists. We couldn’t do what we do without them, and we’ve been really excited to see their ACEP participation grow.

To support our advance provider community, Vituity will sponsor the Society for Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (SEMPA) Roundtable at ACEP16. This is a great place to connect with colleagues and find out what’s on SEMPA’s agenda for the year.

(An interesting aside: just as Vituity shares a long history with ACEP, we’ve also have a rather distinguished one with SEMPA, including several current officers and board members.)

Event details:

  • Sunday, Oct. 16, from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Check the program for location.

Interview for an administrative fellowship.

Vituity administrative fellowships can help you develop the skills you need to lead your practice and hospital. Fellows serve on Vituity’s executive management team and attend all of our leadership programs and academies. They also work with mentors to complete a project in their area of interest.

To learn more about the fellowship and apply now, visit vituity.com. You can also check out this interview with two of our 2015 fellows (who are both now medical directors).

Come by the booth and say hi.

Vituity will debut a brand new booth that captures the innovative spirit of our organization. Stop by booth #S2017 to speak with our physician partners and learn about our fantastic career opportunities for innovators. Plus, enter our twice-daily raffles, and you’ll have the chance to win a free Amazon Echo!

Feel a little shy about walking up and talking with strangers? Here’s some great advice on conference networking from Vituity Regional Director Gary Li, MD.
