(EMERYVILLE, Calif.) Vituity is pleased to announce that the American Association of Women Emergency Physicians (AAWEP has honored Diana Goodwine, MD, with the 2021 Outstanding Emergency Department Director Award. Goodwine currently leads the ED at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois.
AAWEP (a section of the American College of Emergency Physicians) saluted Goodwine as a “tremendous medical director, a strong advocate for her patients, and a constant resource to her team.”
Goodwine attended the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and completed her residency and fellowship in emergency medicine at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois. In addition to her medical director role, she also serves as Vituity’s Director of Clinical Education.
Throughout her career, Goodwine has been drawn to teaching and inspiring others to rise to their greatest potential. As a new partner, she joined Vituity’s Continuing Education Committee in 2012 and later served as its chair. In this role, she organized Vituity’s annual educational conferences, the Spring Symposia, beginning in 2014. Goodwine did much to raise the profile of these events by recruiting world-class speakers and teachers like Amal Mattu, MD; Peter Brindley, MD; Sara Crager, MD; and Kevin Ahmaad Jenkins, PhD.
As a medical director, Goodwine brings hard-to-get educational opportunities to her local ED — especially for nurses and advanced providers. One of her passions is teaching ultrasound, a medium in which she is fellowship-trained. “I get satisfaction when I see other people making diagnoses with the machine,” she says. “They sometimes text or email me afterward because they found an aneurysm or diagnosed a retinal detachment. It’s really fun to see.”
Goodwine initially provided ultrasound workshops for her ED team at MacNeal. However, due to growing demand, she eventually opened the event to all Vituity providers. It remains one of the partnership’s most popular educational programs.
Dr. Goodwine also supports the clinical growth of nurses. One of her most successful workshops involved teaching ultrasound-guided peripheral IV placement to a handful of RNs. She then left MacNeal for a three-year stint in California. “When I came back, I was amazed to see that the nurses who’d learned the procedure had taught all the others,” Goodwine says. “I’d say about three-quarters of them were proficient at it. Their enthusiasm to learn really moved me.”
At every hospital in which she has worked, Goodwine has organized journal clubs. These social and educational sessions rotate through team members’ homes. Whenever possible, Goodwine brings in local specialists to answer questions and provide additional context on current trends and activities.
Goodwine’s current interests include creating inclusive EDs for LGBTQ+ patients. She has written for the Vituity blog on this topic and has recruited inclusion experts to Vituity’s spring symposia.
To unwind after a day in the ED, Goodwine enjoys gardening (she grows her own vegetables) and spending time with her husband and two young children.
The AAWEP Outstanding ED Director Award is presented during the annual ACEP Scientific Assembly. Honorees are chosen by AAWEP’s awards committee. The previous year’s honoree, Nicole Braxley, MD, MPH, is also a Vituity medical director.
